VLAM, Flanders' Agricultural Marketing Board, is a non-profit organization promoting the sale, the added value, the consumption and the image of products and services of the Flemish agriculture, horticulture, fishery and agro-alimentary sector in Belgium and abroad. It is commissioned by the business community and by the Flemish government and cooperates actively with as many links in the food chain as possible.

Such activities entail large amounts of data that should be securely conserved. For their data backup, VLAM had decided to work with EASI, and more precisely with the Safe2be solution. David Jacobs, IT Responsible, lights us up on why they went for Safe2be.

“Before we worked with EASI, it could occasionally happen that during two weeks or even a month long, no tapes were taken to our disaster recovery site. That belongs to the past now.”

"Before working together with EASI, all our data were backed up on tapes, which were brought to a safe and secure location by one of our people. It allowed us to made backups quite often but this way of working also had some disadvantages.  In case of a crash, someone had to drive to our other location to pick up the tapes and then back to our production site. That takes lots of time.

Another -and certainly just as important- disadvantage of this way of working was that the backups were often not taken, or too late. In our backup & disaster recovery plan, the backups had to be transferred weekly, but it wasn’t possible every week. It could occasionally happen that two weeks or even a month long, no tapes were taken to our disaster recovery site. This is why I’ve started looking for solutions to automate these processes.", explains Davy Jacobs.

Smooth implementation

“The implementation of the solution went smoothly. In the beginning there were a few minor issues with the software, but those were quickly resolved. At the start of the project, a planning was made, and this was also respected. In total, the entire process lasted a few weeks. Shortly after the installation, the solution was tested 2 times and everything turned out to function perfectly.

Once a year, our solution will be submitted to a recovery test. Thanks to Safe2be, we have not only automated all the previous manual backup procedures but we can also increase the frequency of our backups. Since our data is now backed up in the cloud, we have more guarantees and security than when they were still on tapes. "
